Teabag Folding

Exactly how teabag folding came about is not overly clear, but the Dutch have taken to it whole-heartedly. Tiny van der Plas however is probably responsible for its expansion. A leading origamist she has written a number of books on the subject. Most of the books are in Dutch but Terri Pointer has written a book in English. In the UK it is causing concern as many do not fancy using soggy teabags. The teabags used are not those containing the tea but the paper sachets that some bags come in.

These are cut into equal sized squares which are then folded in a variety of ways. Join a group of these folded pieces together and you can achieve the effect of a kaleidoscope. As the craft grew the demand for the bags increased and not even tea totallers could keep up. This has led to the introduction of the printed pattern sheet cut to the right size, ready for folding. The most popular way of using teabags is for cards but they can also be used for other things, for instance to make a box lid.

The selection of cards shown on this page are both mine and my son Trevor's. He is working on producing an selling his own cards. If you would like some more information we have a description of what he is presently doing.
